Dr. Philip Gerald Auchampaugh (1897-1949) joined the University of Nevada History Department faculty as an assistant professor in 1941 and was considered an authority on the era of United States President James Buchanan. The collection contains Auchampaugh's personal correspondence and manuscripts, his pamphlet collection, and his autograph collection.

Letter from Buchanan at Wheatland, near Lancaster, to John Van Buren, expressing regret at missing the latter on his visit to Philadelphia; also that the lack of a Democratic majority in the New York legislature would prevent Van Buren from being elected U.S. senator.
