Foresta Institute for Ocean and Mountains Studies was founded in 1960 in Washoe Valley, Nevada by Richard and Maya Miller. The Millers and their associates believed there was a need for a non-governmental, non-profit research organization in the community of western Nevada/eastern California that would encourage, sponsor, and initiate scientific research, resource surveys and other natural history studies. Nancy Gomes (1926-1979) was a member of the Washoe County (Nevada) Board of Education, 1972-1976; and the Nevada State Assembly, 1976-1978 where she initiated legislation on public assistance, child welfare, adoption reform, and the initial Nevada juvenile code.
