 Series

Scope and Contents

The Western Shoshone Nation, the Western Shoshone Defense Project (WSDP), and volunteers are intensely involved with educating the public, nationally and internationally, about the concerns and issues of the Shoshone Nation. As a means for educational outreach, WSDP associates self-produced numerous video documentaries that focuses on the historical and contemporary land claim and treaty issues, participatory meetings with federal agents and organizations as well as conferences and cultural gatherings. Also included are video and audio recordings of similar foci surrounding the concerns and issues pursued by the Western Shoshone.

There have been nationally acclaimed documentaries made about the Western Shoshone and the Dann sisters. In 1974, film maker Joel Freedman released the film, "Broken Treaty at Battle Mountain," followed by "To Protect Mother Earth: Broken Treaty II." In 2008, George and Beth Gage released their documentary "American Outrage." All three documentaries are integral to the message sent about the challenge of the Dann sisters and the Western Shoshone Nation in their testament to Indian sovereignty and self-determination. Documentaries from other filmmakers and the international supporters have been made as well.

The audio and video collection is divided into two series, Series 1: Videos, and Series 2: Audio. Formats in the video collection are predominately VHS but there are few micro-cassette tapes and DVDs. The formats for the audio collection include audio cassettes and micro-cassettes.
