Series 1: Meeting Minutes, 1955-1973

 Series

Scope and Contents

The California-Nevada Interstate Compact Commission was established in 1955 by each legislature in the states of California and Nevada. The purpose was to cooperate as a joint commission in formulating a compact relative to the distribution and use of the waters of Lake Tahoe and the Truckee, Carson, and Walker Rivers. Meetings of the Nevada Commission began in September 1955 and the Joint Commission had its first meeting in January 1956. After twelve years of difficult negotiations between the two states, a Compact was finally adopted by the Joint Commission on July 25, 1968. The California Legislature approved the final document on September 19, 1970, and the Nevada Legislative concurred on March 5, 1971. Due primarily, to the objections of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the compact has not been ratified by the United States Congress (2012).

Series 1 contains minutes of meetings of the Joint California-Nevada Interstate Compact Commission, of its various committees, and of the Nevada Commission of the California-Nevada Interstate Compact Commission. Some agendas and committee reports are filed with the minutes.
