Scope and Contents
The Jean Stoess Papers contains materials collected by Stoess during her time serving as Washoe County Commissioner and on other committees on the Washoe County Board. Materials included in this collection are correspondence, master plans and projects, photographs, maps, research, and additional information she collected during her service. This collection contains materials highlighting the growth and management in the Washoe County area.

Biographical / Historical
Jean Stoess graduated from the University of Oregon with a bachelor’s in Business Administration. She received her master’s at the University of Nevada, Reno specializing in Journalism.
Her passion for the Washoe County Library System began when she regularly visited the Downtown Reno Library. In 1977, she became the first woman to become commissioner for the Washoe County Commission, serving until 1981.
Stoess served on multiple boards such as the Regional Transportation Commission, Washoe County Board of Commissioners, the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority, and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, in adddition to numerous other civic groups active in the region and state.
In addition to her work in civic engagement, Stoess also managed a news service focused on elections, and edited and wrote a number of books.

Abstract
Jean Stoess is a former Washoe County Commissioner. The collection includes papers and material from her term from 1963-1984, in addition to records relating to her work as a civic leader and member of several regional committees.
