Biographical / Historical
The Lahontan Audubon Society is a non-profit organization founded by John Davis and Marge Sill in December 1963. From the period 1963 to 1984, the chapter held a variety of events, such as film series, field trips, and the Christmas bird count, where they would count the type of species in the area. They participated in the state fair and national Audubon Society conventions and lobbied state and national legislators for environmental law. During this time, they made plans to manage and expand the Whittell Nature Center, a large area of land donated by George Whittell, with the intent of nature conservation. They planned to build new paths and several buildings on the reserve.
Today, the Society still focuses on the reservation and preservation of avian habitats through education programs, lobbying, and community outreach. The Lahontan Chapter of the Audubon Society centers on birds specifically located in northern Nevada and California. They continue to hold the annual Christmas Bird count and field trips. The Whittell Nature Reserve is now owned by the University of Nevada, Reno and used as a living laboratory. In addition, the society hosts birding trips for the public, site clean-ups, and classes where individuals can learn how to identify and draw a variety of birds.
