Administrative History

"Vita, Scientia, Amiticitia" ("Life, Learning, Friendship")

Beta Sigma Phi began as a national women's sorority for self-improvement and community service during the Great Depression in 1931. During those years, there was a need to bring women together and expose them to a social, cultural and educational climate that was not necessarily available in those difficult times. Women also found support and friendship with other members. As the years continued, the members took on various community service projects and membership grew. The organization has members of all ages and educational backgrounds.

A chapter’s activities might range from informal gatherings to gala affairs that often would include family and friends. Cultural programs could be offered on a variety of topics including gardening, aspects of the arts, or even in-home businesses. Each chapter decides on its own service projects and participation is voluntary.

Beta Sigma Phi is now an international organization known as “The Friendship Organization”. Members have raised millions of dollars for local charities and donate over 200,000 volunteer hours in an average year. Chapters have created their own International Funds that donate millions of dollars to health research groups, hunger projects, and other worthwhile causes.
