Scope and Contents

The Cyril Hugh Knox Papers include some personal materials, but the major part of the collection consists of business records of Knox, his family, and associates. There are also 74 photos of the Knox family; school teams and graduations; and Nevada and California scenes.

Most of the financial records are in the form of bound volumes of account ledgers and include the following businesses: Lake House, 1882-1883; Nevada Cash Dry Goods-Carpet Store, 1889-1891; and Knox, Ward and Bliss Collecting Agency, 1888.

The correspondence in Series 2 is divided into two small subseries: business and personal. The former includes a letter to Knox and Ward Collecting Agency from George Hammersmith, 1894, and a letter to Cyril Knox from Thomas W. West of the Pioneer Title Insurance Company regarding an award of merit to Knox, 1959. The personal correspondence consists of two letters: to "Hugh" [Cyril Hugh Knox] from "Will", 1896, and to "Papa" from "Nettie", 1897.

The miscellaneous business papers of Series 3 include Cyril's business and public office campaign cards; price and product lists from Cudahy Packing Company [circa 1890s]; a title insurance rate schedule, not dated; a receipt for payment from P. McMartin, 1844; and a court reporter's notebook from the trial of the State vs. Manpin [1894] which is written in shorthand.

The Series 3 miscellaneous documents contains a scrapbook of newspaper clippings (jokes and cartoons), 1899; a Thanksgiving Day greeting, 1898; Cyril's eighth grade report card, 1899; a wedding announcement for James Morris and Mary Knox, 1888; a blank official score card and photo of the Reno Wheelmen's Racing Team, 1905; a penmanship practice sheet; and loose newspaper articles about the Knox family.
