Abstract

Primarily political correspondence with Nevada Senator Pat McCarran. Some letters are accompanied by bills, receipts, and contractor's estimates relating to the Senator's property in and near Reno; or relevant newspaper clippings, memos, or minutes of meetings.

Biographical Note

Peter C. Petersen was born at Thisted, Denmark, in 1893. He was apprenticed as a baker, the trade at which he made a living until 1933. In 1915, he landed in New York City. Three years later, he joined the U. S. Army at Camp Lewis, Washington.

In 1919, he arrived in Elko, Nevada. Later, in Reno, he worked for the Purity French Bakery and he was elected secretary of the Bakers and Confectionery Workers Union.

He was allied politically to Senator Patrick A. McCarran from 1932 until the Senator's death in 1954.

In 1932, Mr. Petersen was elected president of the Nevada State Federation of Labor. Shortly thereafter he was appointed a deputy collector for the Internal Revenue Service. In 1935, he went to work for the Nevada Industrial Commission, and in 1937 he was appointed postmaster for Reno. Upon retirment from the postal service, Petersen was appointed to the Nevada Gaming Commission by Governor Grant Sawyer.
