Historical Note

The idea of forming the Citizens’ Committee for Public Schools was established on September 3, 1953, at the Committee's first organizational meeting. Its constitution states the purpose was "to study the problems of the public schools in Washoe County in order to assist the school boards," "to sponsor and to conduct public forums," and "thorough and impartial studies regarding the public schools." The members were also to "make recommendations of proposed legislative enactments" "to the end that reasonable modern and effective educational opportunities will be available for the children of Washoe County." Following the collection of statistical and other supporting information, the first director’s meeting was held on September 14, 1953, and the first public meeting on September 22, 1953. It is unclear how long the committee continued to operate and with what members; however, financial records show dates up to July 1960.
