Scope and Contents

Letters to Ruggles from Robert Noxon Toppan, 1873-1881, discuss Toppan's activities in international bimetallism conferences and the silver question. Other letters are from New Jersey state geologist George H. Cook announcing completion of the geological survey of New Jersey, 1867; from the U.S. ambassador to France, John Meredith Read, 1869-1870; and from educator John W. Burgess related to his appointment to Columbia University Law School and a financial report written by Ruggles. Also included are minutes of a meeting of the Kansas Petroleum Company discussing sale of stock, 1865.

Biographical Note

Samuel B. Ruggles was a New York lawyer, banker, developer, legislator, and trustee of Columbia University. Ruggles was also a U.S. delegate to the 1863 and 1869 International Statistical Congresses and the 1867 International Monetary Conference, and author of reports and books on international coinage.
