Biographical Note
James M. Slattery was born on November 14, 1907, in North Dakota. He became interested in politics and sports at an early age. Slattery worked as a teacher, miner, casino dealer, rancher in North Dakota and Nevada and served in the Nevada State Assembly from 1950-1952 and the Nevada State Senate from 1954-1970. Slattery also made an unsuccessful run for the U.S. Congress in 1968. Slattery was a good friend of Joe Conforte and was known for often opposing civil rights legislation.
Before Slattery went into politics, he spent a short time teaching, worked in the mines of northern Nevada, and was a rancher.
Additional interest in sports events brought Mr. Slattery national fame as a champion camel and ostrich rider in annual races in Virginia City, Nevada, and as a contestant in the yearly frog jumping contest at Angel's Camp, California.
Slattery died on May 24, 1986.
