Duane L. Bliss, Jr. Papers
Scope and Contents
The Duane L. Bliss, Jr. Papers were discovered inside a black, metal box marked “D.L.B.” by a commercial real estate and management company while moving out an office in the East Bay of California. The metal box remains with the collection. When received, all materials were inside labeled envelopes (which were not sent through the mail, but used to sort the materials by the family), and are retained with the collection. Please note that a few of these envelopes were empty when received.
The Duane L. Bliss, Jr. Papers contains materials that document some of the many business interests in which Bliss and his wife, Florence Dunham Bliss, were involved. Companies with documents included in the collection are the Lake Tahoe Railway and Transportation Company (founded by Duane L. Bliss, Sr., the company was owned entirely by the Bliss family), the Spanish Peak Lumber Company (located in Meadow Valley, Plumas County, California and founded in 1915), Dunham, Carrigan, & Hayden Company, the California Pacific Trading Corporation, and the Post Street Investment Company. Also included are receipts from Dean Witters and Company, Greenwood-Raggio and Company, Hibernia Savings and Loan Society, and Pacific Gas and Electric. Bliss Jr. gave personal loans to individuals and the documents recording some of these loans are included.
Although a majority of this collection consists of business documents there are a few personal documents present. Included are three letters from Bliss’ brother William S. Bliss regarding family matters, papers from the estate of Bliss, Jr.’s father, as well as tax receipts for properties in San Francisco, Plumas County (California), and Lake Tahoe.
