Immediate Source of Acquisition

Donated by Larry Mayne in August 2016.

Mr. and Mrs. Mayne acquired this set of maps in 2014 from the Estate of Efton E. Swindler, deceased of Hawthorne, Nevada. Mr. Swindler came to Mineral County in the early 1930s to work for his uncle and aunt, John and Florence Benedict, who owned the Mt. Grant Lodge at the present site of Walker Lake, Nevada.

Swindler married Nell V. Connelly, the daughter of John J. Connelly and Marie Negrete. J. J. Connelly was the County Recorder for many years beginning in 1926 and, with the exception of about four years, held that office until his death in 1954, a year in which he was running unopposed for re-election; he died prior to that year's general election. During his time as County Recorder and Auditor-Recorder, Connelly performed real property abstracts, a method of checking the validity of a sellers' title before purchasing a property. On Connelly's death, Efton and Nell Swindler obtained many of J. J. Connelly's files, including these and other maps, as well as copies of his property abstracts. Swindler kept Connelly's files until his own death, and they were sold by his three children to Mr. Mayne.

It is unknown from where Connelly obtained these maps, but he did many abstracts on mining properties at Aurora, Nevada over the years before his death. It is logical that these maps may have been sent from Mono County on the inquiry by the Mineral County Recorder.
