Biographical / Historical

In late 1896, Charles A. Jones and Al (Adolf) Livingston drafted a bill for the Nevada legislature that would make "glove contests," boxing matches that followed the Queensberry rules, legal in the state. On January 29, 1897, Nevada Governor Reinhold Sadler signed into law the bill that made prizefighting legal in the state. All of this was in order to hold the now famous Corbett-Fitzsimmons fight, which took place in Carson City, Nevada on March 17, 1897. In addition to making prizefighting legal, the bill also required a $1,000 fee to be paid to the state. The fee would help to stimulate economic growth as well bring tourists to the state, which had yet to recover from the crash of 1893.
