Biographical Note

Bob A. Fulkerson is a fifth-generation Nevadan who has spent his life working to protect the environment and people of the state. His involvement with the political process began when he served as a staffer for Senator Paul Laxalt while attending George Washington University. Soon after his return to Nevada, Fulkerson became the Executive Director of Citizen Alert, a statewide grassroots watchdog organization. He served in that role from 1984-1994. The same year he left Citizen Alert, he co-founded PLAN, the Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada. The mission of PLAN is "to bring together diverse and potentially competing organizations into one cohesive force for social and environmental justice in Nevada."

In addition to his work with Citizen Alert and PLAN, Fulkerson has also served as adjunct faculty at the University of Nevada, Reno's School of Social Work, teaching classes on oppression and privilege. He has also served on the boards of High Country News and The Note Ables, a performing arts group for the disabled. Fulkerson is a 2006-2007 fellow in the Rockwood Leadership Program’s yearlong national fellowship for transformative leadership in the nonprofit sector, and a recipient of the "Leadership for A Changing World" Award from the Ford Foundation. He received the Arcus Social Justice Leadership Fellowship at Kalamazoo College in 2011.

Outside of work, Bob's premier loves are his life partner and family, teaching yoga, and all aspects of nature in the Great Basin and Sierra Nevada.

Historical Note

Citizen Alert is a Nevada non-profit, multi-issue organization dedicated to public participation and government accountability in issues of concern to Nevadans. Citizen Alert was founded in 1975 and since then has worked for public education and action on primary energy resource development, nuclear waste, the Valmy power plant, military air and land withdrawals from the state and Native American nations, the effects of nuclear testing on the state's health and on world peace, and the fragility and interdependence of Nevada's land and water resources.

In the early 1980s this organization formed a successful grassroots campaign to stop the United States government from establishing the MX missile system in Nevada, thus providing a target less susceptible to attack from foreign countries. The proposed MX missile program would have based a military defense program on railroad cars and highways, which would have keep armament moving constantly throughout Nevada and western Utah.
