Scope and Contents

The collection contains seven scrapbooks that include copies of Joanne's poems, correspondence, articles, programs, greeting cards, and photographs of Joanne and her interests. These scrapbooks document the personal life of Joanne, husband Galen, and son Dare. All but one of the scrapbooks are heavily document based. One scrapbook, titled "Their Book" contains primarily photographs of Joanne, Galen, family, and friends at home and on vacation. Additionally, a letter from Joanne to Carol, loose photographs, and a pocket photo album of Joanne De Longchamps and her husband, Galen, family, and friends are also included.

Biographical Note

Carol Darwin Nabors attended high school in Hollywood, California with Joanne (Cutten) de Longchamps. Carol and Joanne remained friends throughout their lives. Carol died in Glendale, California on May 10, 1987.

Joanne Cutten de Longchamps was born in Los Angeles in 1923 and attended schools in Los Angeles and Paris where she studied painting and music. She was encouraged to pursue her artistic and literary talents by her mother, Ruth Avery Cutten, herself a drama coach and producer. In 1941, when Joanne was 18, she married Galen De Longchamps, adopted son of the prominent Nevada architect Frederic De Longchamps. The couple moved to Reno, where they lived for the rest of their lives and in 1949 they had one son, Dare. She later changed the spelling of her last name.
