The collection contains one book survey book owned by William Seth Bliss containing information about land grades, likely for railroads. Two notations on the pages include reference to the Virginia and Truckee Railroad and the Carson and Colorado Railroad, but may only be engineering information for Bliss family-owned lands, including the Lake Tahoe Transportation Company. The outside of the book is marked "Transit Book 12."

Biographical Note

William Seth Bliss was born in Gold Hill, Nevada on August 25, 1865, the oldest child of Elizabeth and Duane Bliss. He graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1888 with a degree in civil engineering. After graduation, Bliss returned home to work in the family business as superintendent of the Carson and Tahoe Lumber and Fluming Company. Just four years later, on September 15, 1892, Bliss married Mabel Evelyn Williams, daughter of the former senator Evan Williams. Unfortunately, their marriage ended tragically soon, on April 28, 1894, just eleven days after the birth of their son, William M. Bliss.

Bliss remained active in the family business and eventually took the lead after his father's death on December 23, 1907.

William S. Bliss died on August 14, 1941, and was buried in Oakland, California.
