Historical Note
The Midtown History Project was initiated by the Regional Transportation Commission of Washoe County (RTC) in 2015 as part of its Virginia Street Bus RAPID Transit Extension Project. The broader RAPID project aimed to create connectivity between the University of Nevada, Reno, downtown Reno, and Midtown, encourage economic development, enhance safety, and improve livability in the Virginia Street corridor. Led by historian Alicia Barber, Ph.D., the history project consisted of archival research, oral history interviews, and the creation of entries for Reno Historical, the Reno history website and app.
The oral history portion of the project was conducted between April 2015 and April 2016. Over the course of those twelve months, thirty individuals participated in interviews about their firsthand experiences and knowledge related to the Midtown area, past and present. After the oral histories were recorded and transcribed, they were reviewed by participants and eventually uploaded to the Nevada Oral History Archives.
