Scope and Contents

The Baumann Family Papers primarily consists of family correspondence and documents from the Baumann family, including Sophia (Baumann Welch), James M. Welch, Roy Welch, William Baumann, Caroline Baumann, and Jacob Baumann. Additional documents from Mary Duffy and Mink DeRonda, as well as legal documents regarding land in the Spokane, Washington area, and photographs, mostly unidentified portraits, are present.

The collection also includes significant correspondence to Piper's Opera House in Virginia City, Nevada, from 1883-1892. This correspondence, principally addressed to John Piper, deals with booking performers at Piper's Opera House. A small amount of other information about the history of the Opera House and Virginia City, Nevada, is also included.

Historical Note

The Baumann family, originally from Ohio, consisted of three brothers and two sisters: John, Jacob, William, Sophia, and Caroline. Jacob, Sophia, and Caroline immigrated to Nevada in the late 1870s, eventually settling in Virginia City. At least one brother, William Baumann (1848-April 15, 1892), remained in Ohio and was a teacher.

Jacob Baumann (August 1846-June 28, 1908) was involved in mining in the Comstock. He died of pneumonia days after his sister Caroline (December 1851-June 7, 1908) who also succumbed to pneumonia. Their sister, Sophia (August 8, 1850-March 27, 1930) relocated to Spokane, Washington with her husband, James M. Welch. Sophia and James had one child: Roy Welch (b. June 9, 1889).

Abstract

The Baumann family, originally from Ohio, consisted of five siblings, three of whom (Jacob, Sophia (Welch), and Carline) settled in Nevada in the 1870s. The collection consists primarily of correspondence to and from the Baumann siblings as well as other documents from their family. Additionally, the collection includes correspondence to John Piper of the Piper's Opera House in Virginia City, Nevada regarding booking performers for the venue.
