Scope and Contents

Leland Smith Papers primarily contains publications regarding forestry; botany; range, livestock, and wildlife management; snow and winter recreation; and water and irrigation. The collection also includes subject files that contain correspondence, articles, and some research. Additionally, some personal materials, including notes and notebooks, diaries, and a photograph album of the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains are also included.

Biographical / Historical

Leland Seymour Smith was born on May 3, 1878 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He was an expert botanist who worked for the USDA Forest Service in the early 1900s. He was assigned to the Modoc National Forest as a grazing technician in 1917. Smith retired from the Tahoe National Forest in Nevada City, California.

Smith married Augusta Ovida Caldwell with whom he had three children: Marie Elizabeth, Leland Seymour Jr., and Warren Caldwell.

Smith died on July 4, 1975 and is buried in the Forest View Cemetery in Nevada City, California.
