Scope and Contents

Great Basin National Park Foundation Oral Histories primarily contains recordings of oral histories done by Dave Tilford, who served on the Foundation board for 20 years, from the mid-2000s-2019. The subjects of the oral histories include sheepherding and the sheep industry, ranching, growing up in the area, working as a park ranger, individuals' experiences during World War II, mining in Nevada, and the founding of the Great Basin National Park.

Historical Note

The Great Basin National Park Foundation was established and incorporated in 1998 under the laws of the State of Nevada with the purpose of raising funds for Great Basin National Park and the National Park Service. Bonnie Bryan, wife of then-senator Richard H. Bryan of Nevada, served as the Founding Chairperson. The Foundation's Oral History Project began in the mid-2000s as a way to preserve and document the cultural heritage of the Great Basin in over 60 interviews with individuals who were raised and worked in the White Pine County, Nevada and Millard County, Utah.

The project was conducted by Dave Tilford with the help and support of the Great Basin National Park Foundation, Great Basin Heritage Partnership, and Denys Koyle of the Border Inn.

Abstract

The Great Basin National Park Foundation Oral History Project begain in the mid-2000s as a way to preserve and document the cultural heritage of the Great Basin in over 60 interviews with individuals who were raised and worked in White Pine County, Nevada and Millard County, Utah. The collection primarily contains oral history recordings by Dave Tilford completed over the course of approximatly 15 years from the mid-2000s-2019.

Oral Histories from 2006-2008 are held by the J. Willard Marriott Library, Univeristy of Utah.

Processing Information

Material was received with interview releases, DVDs, and Mini-DVs stored in enevelopes. The materials were separated by format for ease of storage and retrieval. All releases are contained in one folder.
