Carlin, Nevada Business Documents Collection
Scope and Contents
The Carlin, Nevada Business Documents Collection contains materials from an unknown business operation in or around Carlin, Nevada. The documents may be related to ranching, as the one letter references hiring a vaquero for work. Most of the documents are accounting of payments received from W. S. Hobart, potentially the same Hobart of Virginia City, Nevada lumbering fame, for "services rendered" to John Sullivan, E. P. Osgood, John Haskitt, Dan Garraro, and H. M. Farmer. It is also unknown whether these payment documents and the letter are related.

Historical Note
Carlin, Nevada, located 23 miles west of Elko, was founded in 1867 as the eastbound end of the line for the Central Pacific Railroad; the Carlin post office was established on December 4, 1868. The city was named for Union Army officer William Passmore Carlin. Although land was set aside for a military outpost in 1874, no post was ever established. Ranching and mining were both established by settlers in the 1870s and continue today.
