Scope and Contents
The Frederick Sommer Schmidt Papers contains biographical information about Schmidt in the form of a "Professional Record," a biographical sketch written by his niece Ingrid Ellen Jacobs, and Schmidt's article and associated correspondence and notes "Early Days at the Nevada Consolidated Copper Company, Ely, Nevada" (September 1949).

Biographical Note
Frederick Sommer Schmidt was born on March 6, 1881, in Paterson, New Jersey, the son of German immigrants. He graduated from City College of New York in 1900 and Columbia University in 1903 with a degree in mining engineering. Upon graduation, his first job was for the Nevada Consolidated Copper Company in Ely, Nevada. Over his career, he worked for a number of mines and as a consultant, researcher, and appraiser in the mining industry.
Schmidt passed away on February 1, 1986.
