The Symmes Family Papers primarily contains Whitman Symmes Jr.'s personal materials, law school and military records, and photographs. Additionally, materials relating to the Symmes and Adams families are present, including: estate information and correspondence for family members Ethel Bancroft Richardson, Anita Day Symmes Blake, and Mabel Symmes; genealogical information on the Symmes and Adams family; two books by Harold Symmes; and other family photographs.

Biographical / Historical

Whitman Symmes, of the Symmes and Adams families who were early colonial settlers in the United States who immigrated to the west coast in the mid-1800s, was a mine engineer, superintendent of several of the larger Nevada Comstock Lode mines in the early 1900s, and known on the Pacific coast for his continuous opposition to stockbrokers' methods of controlling the Comstock mines. His son, Whitman Symmes Jr., attended law school at the University of Idaho.
