Scope and Contents

The Nevada Women's Lobby Records contains administrative materials, including articles of incorporation, bylaws, and minutes (1997-2017); newsletters (1999-2013); issues of interest and testimony presented to the Legislature; agenda books and women's issues (1995-2005); "Action Alerts": news releases; material on Grassroots Lobbying Days (1991-2019); the Maya Miller awards; and the work of the Education Committee.

Biographical / Historical

The Nevada Women's Lobby (NWL), a 501(c)4 was formed in 1989 to improve the status of women and children by lobbying public officials and lawmakers. Founded members include Sarah Chvilicek, Beth Elliot, Elaine Enarson, Diana Glomb-Rogan, Helen Jones, Diane Loper, Nancy Moore, Elizabeth Pope, and Diane Williams. The NWL often collaborates with other lobbyist and activist groups, including the League of Women Voters, the American Association of University Women, Planned Parenthood, the Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada, and the ACLU.

Since its inception, the NWL has testified a number of times before the Nevada Legislature, successfully advocating for protection of victims of sexual assult and domestic violence, access to women's health professionals, a cap on child support payments, domestic partnership rights, language protecting non-cis gender individuals, paid sick leave for employeers of over 50 people, and civil penalties for businesses that have been found responsible for gender pay discrimination.

Processing Information

Processed by Jessica Maddox in May 2022. During the course of processing, standard preservation actions were taken. This includes the rehousing of materials into appropriate archival containers and removal of duplicate items. Materials were primarily left in original order, with folders reordered on occassion into chronological arrangment from reverse chronological arrangment. Materials in the Grassroots Lobby Days folders were removed from original pocketed folders and placed in order from materials from the left, followed by the right pockets, into archival folders.
