Biographical / Historical

Ashley Malford George was born May 24, 1933, in Stillwater, Nevada to parents Wuzzie and Jimmy George. He was the youngest of eight children and lived his life sharing the culture and traditions of the Stillwater Toi-Ticutta Paiute lifeways. He attended Churchill County schools as an elementary student and then transferred to Stewart Indian School in Carson City to join other reservation students to complete high school and participate in Stewart’s vocational training programs.

Before graduating from Stewart, George enlisted in the U.S. Army and served a tour in Panama patrolling the Panama Canal. After his honorable discharge from the Army, he returned to Fallon and worked odd jobs in construction and farming to support his family. He relocated to Sacramento, California where he pursued a career as a truck driver hauling hay, eventually joining the Safeway Corporation where he worked for Safeway distribution in Sacramento delivering merchandise to all the stores throughout northern California. George remained with Safeway for 30 years. Once retired from Safeway, he was able to enjoy his time pursuing his own interests, including attending Tribal gatherings throughout California and Nevada, providing Paiute blessings whenever called upon, sharing traditional Paiute lifeways with anyone that would ask, recording Paiute language for preservation for future generations, repatriation of Tribal ancestors, and attending elder and men’s gatherings. George loved to travel and spent time traveling throughout the western United States, Alaska, and Hawaii where he was always excited to see new places and meet other Tribal people of the places he visited.

Ashely George died on April 4, 2023, in Fallon, Nevada.
