Biographical Note

Jane Lehrman was born in Denver, Colorado, in 1932. She attended Grinnell College and Colorado Women's College where she studied education. Upon graduation, she taught 5th grade in the Denver suburbs.

In 1954, she married Phil Lehrman and relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area. While raising their daughters, she returned to Colorado to complete her Bachelor's and Master's degrees at the University of Denver while also teaching music at a middle school in the Bay Area. The guitar curriculum she developed for her master's thesis was the foundation of her music class.

Lehrman moved to the Carson Valley of northern Nevada in 1979. Over the next ten years, she commuted to Reno to teach music in Washoe County School District elementary schools, retiring in 1990. For her teaching, she received the Distinguished Service Award for Fine Teaching.

In 1985, she began writing a weekly column titled "Around Douglas" for the Nevada Appeal. From 1985-1989, her human-interest column featured articles about long-time residents and newcomers to the Carson Valley and surrounding area. Her articles focused on the people behind local landmarks, county and community services, and the unique lifestyles of locals. In 1988, she complied her articles into a volume and published it as Around Douglas: A Collection of Columns About the People of Douglas County as Seen in the Nevada Appeal. A second volume, Around Douglas and Beyond: A Collection of Columns About the People of Douglas County as Seen in the Nevada Appeal, was published in 1990.

Along with Judy Harris, a long-time Dayton, Nevada resident, Lehrman published Around Dayton: A Collection of Columns About the People of Dayton, Nevada, in 1993. This book contained illustrations by local artists and is a collection of interviews of residents. These interviews were the foundation of the KGVM Carson City radio program that aired from 1991-2005. In 1995, Lehrman became the coordinator for the Nevada Appeal and the Record Courier's monthly magazine called Senior Life (later renamed Sierra Magazine, then Silver and Sage). She coordinated legislative events and news columns by experts and wrote feature articles of special interest to seniors. She held this post until 2002.

After "Around Douglas" went off the air, around 2006, Lehrman hosted a weekly program on the public access television station, SNCAT. The show, "AARP Presents," covered lifestyle, legal, financial, and health topics relevant to seniors.

In addition to her teaching, involvement in the newspapers, and radio column, Lehrman also served on numerous committees and associations. She served on the scholarship committee of the Carson Valley University Women's Club, was the president of the Nevada State Retired Teachers Association (1994-1996), and represented the Carson County Chapter of AARP as State Communications Coordinator from 1996-1998.

Lehrman died in Carson City, Nevada, in November 2019.
