Copy of a diary kept by an anonymous author on a journey from St. Joseph to Cedarville, California by way of the Humboldt and Carson Rivers in Nevada. Also included are letters, 1938-1966 from Ralph L. Phelps and Dale L. Morgan regarding the provenance of the diary and geographical details, and a typescript by Phelps.

Arranged chronologically.
Ownership and Custodial History
The original diary was found by Mrs. Matt McGurk between old walls of the fire house on B Street in Virginia City, Nevada, circa 1938. It was copied and transcribed by Phelps, who gave copies to the University of Nevada, Reno, and the Bancroft Library.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
Donated by Ralph L. Phelps in 1938 and transferred to Special Collections Department circa 1965.

Original in private possession. Duplicates of photostat copy at the Bancroft Library, University of California, Berkeley.
