Scope and Contents

The Report is of John H. Forster's inspection trip to Hiko [then Hyko] Silver mines in the Pahranagat Mining District, Lincoln County, Nevada. Included are descriptions of his trip by rail and stage to Nevada; the development, topography and geology of the Pahranagat Valley; support industries (salt mining, lumber mining); and an extensive analysis of the company's mines.

Historical Note

The Hiko Silver Mining Company was located in the Pahranagat Mining District in Lincoln County, Nevada. It was established in 1865 by William Raymond. The company failed around 1869.

John Harris Forster was a mining engineer in Nevada and northern Michigan. He worked as an engineer with the joint Mexican-American Commission that established the Mexican American boundary (1849). Later, he served as the first state senator from northern Michigan.

Forster died 1894.
