Scope and Contents

The Ashton Codd Papers contains reports, surveys, bibliographies, books, and handbooks, and published articles. These records reflect the focus of Codd's work researching snowfall, soil, and runoff of the Western United States, specifically Montana. Also included are records relating to the Western Snow Conference, including an extended bibliography generated by the conference.

Biographical / Historical

Ashton R. Codd was born March 22, 1900 in Stockton, California. He was a Hydraulic Engineer and Snow Surveyor. Throughout his career, he lived in Nevada, Montana, Idaho, Oregon, and California, surveying and researching various soils, snow, and waters in those areas. In 1950, at the Montana State University Agricultural Engineering Department he wrote “Cooperative Snow Surveys” with O.W. Monson. Codd was a student under Dr. James E. Church, where he assisted on Church’s Soda Springs Project, predicting water availability. Codd was also a part of the production of the first Sno-Cat, a fully tracked vehicle designed to drive on snow. He died December 2, 1977 in Monterey, California.

Processing Information

Processed by Allison Frost in 2022. During the course of processing, several standard preservation actions were taken. This includes the preservation and sleeving of photographic materials, as well as the removal of rusted fasteners and interleaving of newspaper clippings with acid free paper, when appropriate.
