Administrative History

The Division of Continuing Education functioned as the academic outreach arm of the University, providing university level, lifelong educational opportunities for Nevadans. It organized and provided student advising for the College of Arts and Science's Bachelor of General Studies degree program. It also had administrative responsibility for the Master of Judicial Studies, a specialized degree program for judges, which was organized jointly by the University, the National Judicial College, and the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges.

The Division of Continuing Education offered undergraduate and graduate academic credit courses throughout Nevada. Some live telecourses were offered for remote students via the Instructional Television For Students system. Televised distance education courses were offered in Washoe County high schools, enabling high school juniors and seniors to earn college credits at reduced tuition. The Division offered professional development programs, administered the University's Summer Session, and had an Independent Study Department to administer correspondence study. Various courses could be taken for academic credit, Continuing Education Unit (CEU) credit, and Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credit. The Program for Adult College Education (PACE) offered a way for undergraduate students to earn a degree by taking evening and weekend classes. Dr. Gay Neuberger became Director of Academic Credit Programs in the fall of 1991, serving in that capacity until her retirement. In 2000, the unit became the College of Extended Studies.
