Administrative History

Early in the University's history music courses were offered through the School of Education. The College of Arts and Science listed a Music Department in the 1953-54 course catalog and first offered courses leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree in music in the 1956-57 academic year.

Dance classes were offered by the Department of Physical Education, later known as the Recreation and Physical Education Department, from 1976-77 through 1989-90. The College of Human and Community Sciences became the home of the Recreation, Physical Education, and Dance Department from 1990-91 through 1996-97. The Health, Wellness and Exercise Sciences Department offered dance classes from 1997-98 through 1998-99. Physical Education became Health Ecology in the spring of 1999. The Department of Health Ecology offered dance classes from 2000-01 through July 2004.

Reorganization efforts at the University resulted in the establishment of the College of Liberal Arts and the College of Science, which replaced the College of Arts and Science in 2004. The School of the Arts is a component of the College of Liberal Arts. The Department of Music and Dance existed until June 2010. In July 2010, the School of the Arts formed the Department of Theatre and Dance and the Department of Music.
