Administrative History
The Nevada Legislature created the position of State Mineralogist during its second session in 1866. One job responsibility was to establish a mining school at the University of Nevada, with oversight by the Board of Regents. The position became an elective office in 1869, and a School of Mines was established at the new Reno campus of the University in 1888. The State Mining Analytical Laboratory was established in 1895. The University's School of Mining was renamed the Mackay School of Mines in 1906. The Nevada Bureau of Mines was created in 1929 as a public service division of the University. The Nevada Legislature changed the name of the organization to the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology in 1971. ["History of the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology" by Joseph V. Tingley, 1988.]
The Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology (NBMG) is a research and public service unit of the University of Nevada and is the state geological survey. NBMG is part of the Mackay School of Earth Sciences and Engineering (formerly the Mackay School of Mines) within the College of Science at the University of Nevada, Reno and is one of its statewide programs. NBMG scientists conduct research and publish reports on mineral resources, engineering geology, environmental geology, hydrogeology, and geologic mapping.
