Scope and Contents

The materials in this collection contain the proposal and establishment of the Nevada Technical Institute, and documentation on the purchase of Stead Air Force Base for the teaching facility. They are the records of the University Committee on Stead Air Force Base, James Anderson, committee member, and contain correspondence, memorandums, report, press clippings, and a copy of a speech by Governor Grant Sawyer on education in Nevada.

Historical Note

In 1964, General University Extension developed a technical program offering two year associate degrees in several occupational fields. In 1965, Stead Air Force Base, located north of Reno, was closed. The University, wishing to acquire parts of the facility for University and community use, successfully proposed using the Stead facilities for establishing the Nevada Technical Institute (NTI). By 1971, though, other Nevada colleges had absorbed these programs, and the scope of General University Extension had been reduced.

Abstract

In 1964, General University Extension developed a technical program offering two year associate degrees in several occupational fields and began operation at the former Stead Air Force Base in 1965. By 1971, other Nevada colleges had absorbed these programs, and the scope of General University Extension had been reduced. The collection contains documentation on the purchase of Stead Air Force base; proposal and establishment of the Nevada Technical Institute; and records of James T. Anderson, a member of the University committee on Stead Air Force Base, with correspondence, memorandums, reports, press clippings, photographs and a copy of a speech by governor Grant Sawyer on education in Nevada.
