Scope and Contents

This collection contains general correspondence with other geologists and graduate students, a report on the Eagle Springs oil well in Nye County, Nevada, and manuscript with notes of Mackay School of Mines: Reminiscences on the Growth of a College. Also included is correspondence, script, and a copy of the instructional film he produced in 1972, funded by the National Science Foundation, Across the Cordillera: Genesis of a Geosyncline, a synopsis of 600 million years in North American geology with emphasis on the Basin Range Province of the Great Basin region, with aerial film segments including geology structure in Nevada, Arizona, Utah, and California.

Biographical Note

Edward R. Larson joined the geology faculty, University of Nevada, Reno, in 1949, and served as department chairman, 1952-1966. He was a graduate of Columbia University, and before coming to Nevada, was employed by the U.S. Geological Survey, Alaska Branch, and taught at the Missouri School of Mines. His primary fields of interest were stratigraphy and structural geology. In 1972, he received a grant from the National Science Foundation and produced an instructional film, Across the Cordillera: Genesis of a Geosyncline, which includes aerial film segments including geology structure in Nevada, Arizona, Utah, and California. In 1975, he wrote a history, Mackay School of Mines: reminiscences on the growth of a college.

He was a graduate of Columbia University, and before coming to Nevada, was employed by the U.S. Geological Survey, Alaska Branch, and taught at the Missouri School of Mines. His primary fields of interest were stratigraphy and structural geology. This collection consists of general correspondence with other geologists and graduate students concerning geologic formations; a 1942 report on Vlightburg Hill, Rondout, New York; a 1954 report on Eagle Springs, Nye County, Nevada; manuscript and notes on Mackay School of Mines: reminiscences on the growth of a college; and two copies of Across the cordillera: genesis of a geosyncline, a 16mm, 29 minute, color film on the geology of the Basin Range province of the Great Basin region.
