Administrative History
In 1957, the University of Nevada Music Department held the first Lake Tahoe Music Camp Summer School program for 8th-12th grade students and music directors from Nevada, California, and other states. Starting in 1958, it was held at the 4-H campgrounds on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe in Stateline, Nevada. Classes offered covered band, chorus, theory, conducting, piano, opera, ensemble, and orchestra; University credit was available. University music professor William Keith Macy, who helped found the camp, acted as the first director until 1959 when music professor John L. Carrico assumed the directorship. Instructors included University of Nevada, Reno, faculty and visiting instructors from other states.
More recently, administration of the camp moved under University's Division of Continuing Education from the Department of Music. It is currently administered by the University's Extended Studies and is under the auspices of the School of the Arts within the College of Liberal Arts.
