Administrative History
The Women's Resource Center opened in September 1980 to provide a relaxing atmosphere in which women could meet, talk, study, and organize programs and events for both university and community women. It provided resources and referrals, spaces for meetings and studying, a gender studies library, and scholarship information. Originally staffed by residents and volunteers, in 1984/85 the center received a budget from the university to help with programs. In 1984, a Director of Women's Programs position was created. In 1987, this was divided into two positions: Director of the Women's Center and the Chair of Women's Studies academic unit. Attorney Helen Jones served as the first director of the Center. The Center closed in 2001.
