Scope and Contents

The William C. Miller Diaries includes copies of his handwritten diaries, as well as transcriptions, that detail Miller's years at the University of Nevada from January 1935 through graduation in May 1938. In the diaries, he included many details about attending the University of Nevada as well as life in Reno, Nevada before World War II. Information regarding his activities in journalism, sports, and other various clubs is also included.

Biographical Note

Robert C. Miller was born in California on June 10, 1915. Miller entered the University of Nevada in January 1935. At the same time, he began keeping a diary, recording his living expenses, student activities, personal observations and comments on instructors, student acquaintances, theater, athletics, weather, and Reno. He was a resident of Lincoln Hall and was active in school activities, including track, theater, several clubs, and wrote for the student newspaper, the Sagebrush.

As a 1938 journalism graduate, Miller went to work for the United Press International and remained with them as a foreign correspondence for 46 years. In his career, he covered top news stories in the world, including the Guadalcanal campaign, the invasion of Europe on the Normandy beaches in World War II, and the Nuremberg Trials. Later, as chief of the South Pacific bureau of the United Press, he covered the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Europe at various times. During this time, he continued to write in his diaries.

Miller passed away on July 26, 2004, in Hilo, Hawai'i at the age of 89.

Existence and Location of Originals

Although it is unclear of the location of the original diaries from 1935-1938, original diaries from 1938-1960 are held by the University of Wyoming, American Heritage Center.

Processing Information

After 1994, Miller donated copies of the diaries from 1938-1960 to University Archives. These copies have not been maintained as the original diaries are held by the University of Wyoming.
