Administrative History

Women's Studies was an interdisciplinary program in the College of Arts and Science. Established in 1978, the program provided students with a fuller understanding of the nature and role of women, along with their contributions to civilization, through academic study.

The Interdisciplinary Women's Studies Advisory Board selected Elaine Enarson as the first Program Coordinator, when the position was funded in 1985-1986. During that time, the Program's office had temporary housing in the Ansari Business Building. The program later moved to the Mack Social Sciences Building. Later Directors were former State Assemblywoman Jean Ford, Dr. Jennifer Ring, and Dr. Mary W. Stewart. Dr. Stewart was instrumental in establishing the Women's Studies master's degree program at the University.

In November 2006, the program launched a campus newsletter. The Women's Studies Program became part of the Gender, Race and Identity Program in 2009.
