Administrative History

The Core Curriculum Diversity Committee was established in 1993 by the Core Curriculum Board to make recommendations for increasing diversity of course content in the university's core curriculum. The aim of the committee is to increase student understanding of and appreciation for non-western cultures and excluded groups within western culture. The committee intends the diversity courses to complement the current core curriculum requirements, including the western traditions (core humanities) requirements. In the committee's 1993 proposal, members stated that the central recommendation is that every undergraduate student's program of study include at least one course which has as its theme a topic pertaining to non-western cultures or to excluded groups within western culture, beginning with the Fall 1994 freshman class.
