Administrative History

In late 1982, the Board of Regents arranged for the creation of an ad hoc advisory board to evaluate the future of engineering education in the University of Nevada System. The members of the Advisory Committee were: Dr. Paul F. Chenea, former Vice President for Academic Affairs at Purdue University; Dr. Arthur Anderson, Vice President of IBM; Dr. Stephen R. Cheshier, President of the Southern Technical Institute; Dr. Frank D. Drake, the Goldwin Smith Professor of Astronomy at Cornell University; and Mr. Hugh Miller, Executive Officer of the National Academy of Engineering. The committee was asked to assess the present state of engineering education and technology in Nevada, to access the status of the basic science departments (chemistry, mathematics, physics, and computer science) which were needed to provide support for engineering education; and to provide the Board of Regents with a report describing its findings and a discussion of potential options for the long-term future of engineering education in Nevada. Subsequently, the College of Engineering established the Engineering Advisory Board in 1984.
