Scope and Contents

The Records of the President of the University of Nevada, Reno, N. Edd Miller consists of a 1966 certificate of congratulations to N. Edd Miller upon his installation as the first chancellor of the Reno campus of the University of Nevada from Tuskegee Institute and a scrapbook presented to President Miller by his Student Affairs staff upon his retirement from the University in 1973.

Biographical Note

Dr. Newton Edd Miller was born in Houston, Texas, on March 13, 1920. He obtained his bachelor's degree and a master's degree from the University of Texas in Austin. He met his wife, Edwina "Nena" Miller (August 7, 1922-October 22, 2010) at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. They had two children: Cathy and Kenn. He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.

Miller was appointed as the first chancellor of the University of Nevada's Reno campus on February 11, 1966. In 1967, he became the President of the University of Nevada, Reno. In an era of civil unrest and campus protests, he and the University gained international prominence when students organized N. Edd Miller Day on October 7, 1969, in appreciation of his willingness to listen to students' concerns. Later he oversaw a peaceful resolution to the May 5, 1970, Governor's Day anti-war protest on campus. He served as President until 1973, when he left Nevada to become President of the University of Maine at Portland-Gorham (1973-1978). Dr. and Mrs. Miller returned to Reno in 1988. In 2003, he received the Distinguished Service to the Arts award from the Nevada Arts Council.

Dr. Miller died in 2004.
