In January 1966, the University received an invitation from the Office of Economic Opportunity to participate in Project Upward Bound for the summer of 1966. An Academic Policy Committee was formed to serve in an advisory capacity to the Dean of the General University Extension, which was to be the administrative agency responsible for the management of the program. Project Upward Bound is funded by the Office of Education, Department of Health, Education and Welfare and operates in conjunction with the University of Nevada, Reno. The program provides academic activities, career counseling, cultural events, educational field trips, housing, and tutoring for low income and first generation high school students, with the goal of helping them succeed in graduating from high school and preparing them for success in college or post-secondary vocational training. The first UNR Upward Bound summer residential program was held from June 4-August 4, 1967, and has been continuously funded at the University since that time.
