Biographical Note
John Mark Lilley was born on March 24, 1939, in Converse, Louisiana, the son of a Baptist minister. He graduated from Baylor University in 1964 with bachelor's degrees in music education and church music and a master's degree in music. He then worked at the University of Southern California and entered its doctoral program. He taught at The Claremont Colleges from 1966-1976, completing his Ph.D. in music from USC in 1971.
In 1973 he became chair of the music department at Scripps College. He served as Assistant Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Kansas State University from 1976-1980 and received a certificate from the Harvard Business School in 1978. He then served as Dean and Provost at Pennsylvania State University, Erie from 1980-2001.
In October 2001, Lilley became the fourteenth President of the University of Nevada, Reno, serving until 2005. He then served as President of Baylor University from 2006-2008. He has served on the Board of the Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada and the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
Periodic transfers from the Office of the President, including 2006, February 2014 and March 2015. Copies of some records were obtained during 2013 as part of a Document Recovery for University History project and were inter-filed in appropriate folders.
