Biographical Note
Catherine Parsons Smith began as a part-time lecturer in the Music Department, University of Nevada, Reno, in 1969. By 1972, Smith was teaching under a complicated multiple contract arrangement that equaled almost full-time, but without equal compensation. She filed a complaint and, after numerous hearings, was terminated in 1975. The U.S. Department of Labor filed suit on her behalf, the first in the nation under the Equal Pay Act, against the University of Nevada, and an out-of-court settlement was reached. She became a tenured member of the Music Department faculty. She died in Reno in 2009.
