Biographical Note

Dr. Leon Wilson Hartman was born in Downsville, New York, on June 18, 1876. He obtained his Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts degrees from Cornell University in 1898 and 1899, respectively. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1903, where he was a Fraser Fellow and a Tyndale Fellow in Physics. He taught physics at the Kansas Agricultural College, Cornell University, and the University of Utah before becoming Professor of Physics at the University of Nevada in 1909. When President Walter E. Clark resigned in 1938, Hartman served as acting President. He was inaugurated as President on December 15, 1939, serving in that capacity until his death on August 27, 1943, in Palo Alto, California. His presidential portrait was unveiled on May 7, 1945.

Abstract

Leon W. Hartman (1876-1943) was a professor of Physics at the University of Nevada from 1909-1938 when he became acting president upon the resignation of President Walter E. Clark. He was inaugurated as President on December 15, 1939, serving in that capacity until his death on August 27, 1943, in Palo Alto, California. His presidential portrait was unveiled on May 7, 1945. The collection is composed of biographical material, correspondence, a monograph about electrical engineering written by Dr. Hartman while he was a member of the Physics Department faculty, programs for his presidential inauguration ceremony and the unveiling of his portrait, and journals he kept during his administration.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

DeLaMare Library Director Glee Willis transferred the copy of "An Introduction to Electrical Measurements" by Dr. Hartman to Archives in 1999. The inauguration program was found among unprocessed archival material after 2008. Some material transferred from the Archives Biographical File in 2015. Dr. Hartman's journals donated to Archives in 2015 by his family. One folder of correspondence was transferred from Special Collections NC782 for AC 0612 in 2016.
