Historical Note

The Staff Employees' Council formed the University Balloon Race Scholarship Committee in 1986 and has awarded scholarships since the early 1990s. Each year, the Committee awards two scholarships to one undergraduate and one graduate student. The committee raises money for the scholarships by selling raffle tickets and commemorative lapel pins; a new pin is design every year. Committee members are trained to serve as crew for the pilot of the University's hot air balloon during the annual Great Reno Balloon Race held in September each year at Rancho San Rafael Park, just west of campus. Both classified employees and faculty can serve as members of this committee.

Abstract

The Staff Employees' Council formed the University Balloon Race Scholarship Committee in 1986 and has awarded scholarships since the early 1990s. Records contain administrative materials, as well as promotional materials for the scholarship and for the Great Reno Balloon Race.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Transferred by members of the committee in 2015 and 2017. Additionally, Virginia Kersey donated six lapel pins in 2017.
