Scope and Contents

The School of the Arts Records include promotional material about performing arts programming at the University of Nevada, Reno campus, newspaper clippings, and similar material for the School's Department of Theatre and Dance, Department of Music, and Department of Art. Of particular interest are recordings of several performances by the Nevada Chamber Opera.

Administrative History

The University of Nevada, Reno, College of Liberal Arts, School of the Arts was established in July 2004 after the College of Liberal Arts was created from the reorganization of the College of Arts and Science. From 2004-June 2010, the Department of Music and Dance existed as one entity. In July 2010, the two departments split and formed the Department of Theatre and Dance and the Department of Music.

The University created the School of Arts as a larger push toward embracing the Reno is Artown arts movement. The newly formed School of the Arts unified six existing departments and programs already established at the University: Black Rock Press, Dance, Music, Speech Communication, Theater, and Visual Arts. Their mission statement in 2004 was "Inspiring educational excellence, creativity, and collaboration."
