Administrative History

The University's Committee on the Status of Women was formed in the fall of 1981, consisting of faculty, staff, students and community members. Its original purpose was to communicate with people interested in women's issues at the University and in the broader community, to educate the University community about the scope and progress of Affirmative Action at UNR, and to investigate or research, as appropriate, timely issues of University import. The Committee was also charged with producing reports with recommendations for action to the UNR community and appropriate administrative and faculty officers. The Committee initially reported to the University's Vice President. Later it reported to the President through the Special Assistant to the President for Diversity. The Committee currently reports to the Provost. Through the years, the Committee has had various subcommittees addressing various issues, including: campus safety, personnel matters, scholarships, and a women's center planning subcommittee.

The Committee collaborates with AAUW of Northern Nevada to provide WAGE Project workshops for university students to develop their salary negotiation skills when entering the workforce. The Committee is a member of the Intercultural Council.
